SAINT JOSEPH – The Ichabods had two late-game comebacks fall short as they were swept at Missouri Western State Wednesday night. Washburn fell to 26-19 and 14-8 in the MIAA, losing the opener 3-2 and the night cap 10-9 in 10 innings. The Ichabods, now fourth in the MIAA behind MWSU, will play their final home stand of the year as they host Central Missouri State Saturday and Sunday in 1 p.m. doubleheaders. Senior Day will be celebrated Sunday between the two games.

In the opener Jake Lenherr kept the Ichabods in it as he pitched all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks. The Washburn bats could not produce for Lenherr until the sixth inning. Jesse Schmidt drove in Sam Sissom on a sacrifice fly and Michael Hammersmith drove in Luke Manners with a single.

In the second game the Griffons jumped to a 9-0 lead after four innings. Washburn finally broke up the shutout in the seventh with four runs and then got five more in the eighth to tie it. Both teams came up empty in the ninth and then Western got the winning run with an RBI single in the 10th.

Tommy Mangino was 2-for-4 as the designated hitter and hit his first home run, a two-run shot to left in the seventh. Hammersmith and Chris Atkins were both 3-for-5 with two RBI and Manners had a double and triple, scoring two runs.

The Ichabods used four pitchers while MWSU used five. Matt Traxler provided damage control for WU, pitching 3 2/3 innings of hitless and scoreless relief as the Ichabods came back.
