Ichabods use long ball in sweep at SBU, Manners blasts three in opener

BOLIVAR, Mo. - Luke Manners hit three two-run homers in the first game as the Ichabods hit nine homers in a doubleheader sweep at Southwest Baptist Friday afternoon. Washburn is now 21-14 and 9-3 in the MIAA. The same two teams will play two more Saturday at noon.
Manners was 4-for-4 with seven RBI, helping Washburn to a 12-7 win. He became the first Ichabod to hit three homers in a game since Joey Webb did it in 1999. His seven RBI also tied Fernando Esquivel’s effort, also in 1999.
Mark Stoltz, Tyler Blankenship and Bryce Wood also hit long balls in the opener.
In the second game Stoltz added another homer as did Michael Hammersmith and Jesse Schmidt. The Ichabods held on to win that one 11-9.
Jeff LaCerte pitched six of seven innings in the opener to get the win and Randy Wild went seven innings in the second game for the win. Brett Unrein pitched part of the eighth and all of the ninth to get the save.
