Anson signs nine for upcoming 2007 season

Washburn baseball coach Steve Anson announced his 2007 recruiting class this week, adding four junior college transfers and five recent high school graduates to the Ichabods roster. The nine players, eight from Kansas and one from Colorado, will look to take the field this spring and fill the roster spots of eight graduated seniors.

Washburn went 29-25 last year and finished fourth in the MIAA to make its first trip to the postseason tournament since 2001. The Ichabods were seventh in the final NCAA regional poll and came within just one spot of making their first trip to the NCAA tournament.

A 2006 graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School…led his team in batting average (.411), hits (28), RBI (25), doubles (9) and slugging percentage (.571)…second on the team with a 2.88 ERA…helped the Saints to a conference championship and first state appearance in six years.

Born April 23, 1987…parents are Teresa and Steve Cook…majoring in finance.

Played two years at Fort Scott CC as an outfielder…a 2004 graduate of Gardner-Edgerton High School where he was named all-conference as an outfielder his senior season…holds the school record for single-season batting average at .552…named the team defensive player of the year his junior year and offensive player of the year his senior year.

Born May 24, 1986…parents are Elizabeth and Bernie Egan…majoring in criminal justice.

Zachary Engelken • P • 6-2 • 175 • Jr./Tr. • Vermillion, Kan. • Cloud County CC • Centralia HS
Played two years at Cloud County CC and was named to the honorable mention all-conference team as a pitcher his freshman year…pitched four years at Centralia HS with a 28-2 record, 303 strikeouts, 39 walks, 22 earned runs and three saves…earned first-team all-state honors as a guard in basketball.

Born August 29, 1985…son of Jeanie Combs and Alfred Engelken…majoring in physical education.


Wesley Joy • Ut. • 5-10 • 175 • Fr./HS • Burlington, Kan. • Burlington HS

A 2006 graduate of Burlington High School where he lettered in baseball four years…was an all-state utility player his final two years…also played football and was an all-league quarterback twice…a National Honor Society member.

Born October 14, 1987…son of Cindy and Bryan Joy…plans to major in history/pre-law.

A 2006 graduate of St. Mary’s High School where he earned all-state and all-league honors his final three years…helped his team to regional championships all four years…also earned all-league honors in basketball as a point guard and in football he earned all-state and all-league honors as a linebacker.

Born September 10, 1987…son of Lisa and Kevin Kinderknecht…majoring in athletic training…his mother played basketball at Kansas.

A 2006 of Denver Academy where her played baseball, basketball and football…earned all-state and all-conference honors…led his team in batting average…named team captain and MVP.

Born September 27, 1988…son of Sandy and Mike Perry…majoring in business.

Played two years at Cloud County CC and broke the stolen base record for a season (43) and career (68)…a 2004 graduate of Bishop O’Hara High School where he earned all-conference and all-district honors twice…was a Mo-Kan All-Star.

Born February 4, 1986…parents are Debora Chadd-Peter and George Peter…majoring in computer science…his uncle, David Chadd, was an All-American designated hitter at Kansas State.

A 2006 graduate of Topeka West High School where he lettered in baseball for three years…earned all-league honors once and all-city honors twice…also lettered in soccer for four years.

Born February 4, 1988…parents are Susan and Gregg Schell...majoring in athletic training.

Played outfield and first base for Cloud County CC for two years…a 2004 graduate of Topeka West High School where he earned all-state honors his final two years…and earned all-city and all-league honors three times…also played on the Charger football offense and defense.

Born November 24, 1985…parents are Cathy and Bob Walton…majoring in psychology.
