Ichabod end up on losing end in a pair of offensive games

HAYS, Kan. – The Ichabods couldn’t hold on to a 7-0 lead in the first game and then in the second game the Tigers blasted six home runs on the way to a doubleheader sweep over Washburn. The Ichabods fell to 13-16 overall and 7-9 in the conference while Fort Hays State jumped to 23-12 and 11-7. WU’s next action will be a four-game series with Missouri Western starting Friday at 5 p.m. at Falley Field.
The Ichabods scored 17 runs of their own off 23 hits in the two games but the Tigers had 14 extra-base hits, including 10 home runs. Dan Egan was 6 for 9 for the Ichabods with a homer and five RBI in the games. Zach Walton also drove in five runs with three hits and WU’s other homer.
Washburn jumped to a 7-0 lead in the opening inning of game one. After the first three batters reached Walton hit a grand slam to left field. Later in the inning Egan drove in a pair on a single and then Wes Joy’s sacrifice fly plated the final run of the inning.
The Ichabods were kept at bay for the next five innings while FHSU mounted its comeback. The Tigers got one in the first, two in the third and two more in the fifth. The Ichabods built their lead to 9-5 in the top of the seventh and final inning off a pair of RBI singles from Calvin Iversen and Egan. The Tigers then erased that lead and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. They led off with a walk and a two-run homer and then a two-run double ended the game.
In the second game Fort Hays State took a 5-0 lead after an inning. The Ichabods fought back and led, 8-6 after four and a half innings but then the Tigers got nine unanswered runs for the win.
Egan was 3 for 5 in the second game while Iversen and Joy each had a pair of hits. |
