Washburn split a pair of games in its opening day doubleheader with Mary Friday as head coach Steve Anson won his 700th game. The Ichabods took the first game 7-2 to help Anson reach the milestone in his 29th season as a head coach and then the Marauders came back in game two to win 9-7 in eight innings. The two teams had a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday afternoon but it has been canceled do to field conditions and expected cold temperatures. Washburn’s next game will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Rockhurst at Falley Field.

Game 1
Junior Kyle Peter had a three-run home run and stole a pair of bases in his first action at WU and senior Tommy Mangino and junior Mark Stoltz were each 2 of 3 as the Ichabods defeated Mary 7-2 in the opener.

After Peter walked to lead the game off junior Dan Egan followed with a double and then Mangino walked. Stoltz singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Peter and Egan to open scoring. Junior Tyler Blankenship then drove in Mangino on a fielder’s choice and Washburn had a 3-0 lead after an inning.

The Ichabods got one more in the fifth when Mangino doubled in a run and then senior pitcher Randy Wild gave up Mary’s only two runs off a triple and an error in the next half inning.

The Ichabods got three more in the bottom of the sixth when Peter’s drive to center field bounced off the top of the fence and fell over for a three-run homer. Peter drove in freshman Wes Joy and junior Nathan Proctor.

Wild gave up the two runs, six hits, two walks and struck out three as he won his first game of the year. Senior Keith Barkemeyer pitched the final inning and faced the minimum, three as he struck out one.

Anson won his 700th game in his 29th year as a head coach. He got 677 of those wins at WU and 23 in his rookie year at Wayne State (Neb.) in 1979. Anson is 700-605-3 in 29 years overall and 677-583-3 in his 28th year at Washburn.

Game 2
Washburn jumped out to a 4-0 start but then Mary came back and forced extra innings in the second game. The Marauders went on to score four runs in the eighth to win the nightcap 9-7.

WU once again broke through Mary pitching with multiple runs in the first. Peter walked, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He was then driven in when Egan doubled down the leftfield line. Mangino singled to drive in Egan, advanced to third on a double by Stoltz and then scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Zach Walton. Blankenship’s RBI groundout then scored Stoltz.

The Marauders broke through for a run in the fourth and then Washburn got it back when Blankenship doubled in Mangino in the fifth.

Mary got within a run when it scored three in the sixth off three hits and an error. The Marauders then tied it and forced extra innings in the seventh when they had two straight two-out doubles.

In the top half of the extra frame the Marauders poured on four runs on four hits. The Ichabods started their half of the eighth with Blankenship reaching on an error. Junior Robert Dolan later drove him in on a groundout and then Peter drove in a run with two outs to pull Washburn within two. That would be all the Ichabods could manage as the Marauders improved to 2-6.

Mangino was 3 for 4 during the game and 5 of 7 during the two games.

Junior Jeff LaCerte started on the mound for WU and went six innings, giving up four runs but striking out a career-high 10. Junior Sam Keim pitched 1 2/3 innings and picked up the loss.
