The Ichabods had just four hits in a 9-0 shutout in the first game Tuesday against Northwest Missouri State at Falley Field but then the offense erupted for a 10-4 win in the second game. The first game of the doubleheader started 32 minutes late because of a tornado warning that expired just before the original start time and then lightning delayed the game further in the third inning. Washburn (20-25, 14-18 MIAA) will wrap up the season Friday and Saturday with a pair of doubleheaders at Southwest Baptist.
Tyler Blankenship went 5 for 7 during the two games with three RBI while Wes Joy was 4 for 5 in the second game to raise his batting average to .405 on the year.
The six Ichabod seniors were honored between games during Senior Day ceremonies. Tyler Frazee, Randy Wild, Jake Loveless, Jeff LaCerte, Keith Barkemeyer and Tommy Mangino each played their final games at Falley Field.
Game 1
Washburn’s first six batters in the lineup went hitless as the Bearcats cruised to a 9-0 win in the opener.
The Ichabods went down in order the first two innings before Blankenship and Calvin Iversen led off the third with singles. NWMSU starter Brian Lamers then retired the next three batters to stop one of Washburn’s few scoring threats.
Ichabod Jake Loveless made his second start of the year and suffered the loss. He went 3 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, off five hits.
Game 2
Washburn took a 2-0 lead after the first inning and then put away the Bearcats with an eight-run third inning to lead to a 10-4 win and a doubleheader split.
In the first inning Wes Joy and Zach Walton each reached on walks and then Blankenship drove them in with a single to left center field.
The Bearcats cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the third but then Washburn jumped way ahead with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Walton led off with a walk and then scored the first run when Iversen drove him in with a single.
After Nathan Proctor walked the Ichabods had three straight one-run singles through the left side of the infield to force a pitching change. The new hurler hit Mark Stoltz with the bases loaded to force in a run and then Blankenship drove in his third run of the night with a single to right that ended WU’s scoring in the inning and the game.
Starter Jake Iverson went the required five innings to pick up his first win of the year. He allowed two runs, one earned, off six hits and three walks. Four relievers then each pitched an inning for Washburn, allowing two runs off three hits to preserve the win. |
