May 21, 2003
Washburn coach Steve Anson announced Wednesday morning
that Silver Lake High School's Brian Martinek signed a letter of intent
to play baseball for the Ichabods next season.
Martinek, a 5-11 right-handed catcher and pitcher, earned
all-league honors four seasons and all-state honors three seasons for
the Eagles in baseball.
"Brian is a very aggressive player and competitive
young man, who also excels in the classroom," said head Coach Steve
Anson. "We are very excited to have him join our program."
Martinek batted .553 and had a .908 slugging percentage
for Silver Lake as a junior in 2002, leading the squad to the Class
3A State Tournament. He collected 42 hits, including six home runs and
also had a 6-1 record with a 2.12 ERA on the mound for the Eagles.
He also was a three-year letter winner in basketball
and football at Silver Lake, earning all-league and all-state honors
on the gridiron as a wide receiver and quarterback for the Eagles the
past two seasons.
Martinek is the first player to sign in the spring recruiting
period for the Ichabods.
