Seven named to All-MIAA squad

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Seven members of the Washburn baseball squad were named to the All-MIAA team, which was announced by the conference office Thursday afternoon. Jerad Head and Mike Koontz were Washburn’s second team selections. Jake Loveless, Jake Lenherr, Cameron Clurman, Sam Sissom and Randy Wild were honorable mention selections.

Head, a 6-1 sophomore from Topeka, Kan., played 37 games at shortstop after also competing on the Ichabod basketball squad. Head lead Washburn with a .419 batting average and 27 stolen bases. He was second in the conference in batting and led the league in stolen bases per game with .73 per game. He was an honorable mention All-MIAA selection as a freshman.

Koontz, a 6-3 senior from Atchison, Kan., batted .408 with a team-highs of 62 hits and 43 RBI. He was third in the conference in hitting and was in the top 10 in the MIAA in doubles, on base percentage and slugging percentage. He improved his batting average by .129 points after hitting .279 as a junior in 2003.

Loveless, a 5-10 freshman from Lyndon, Kan., was 6-1 with a team-best 3.20 ERA in 45.0 innings . He struck out 34 batters, while walking only 12 in nine appearances. He was named MIAA Pitcher of the Week after tossing a six-hit shutout at Pittsburg State Saturday.

Lenherr, a 6-0 sophomore from St. Marys, Kan., led the team in victories with a 7-2 record and had a 5.25 ERA in hit team-best 70.1 innings of work. He tossed four complete games to tie for the league lead, including a one-hit shutout against Wayne State Feb. 27. He was tied for seventh in the MIAA in wins and ninth in strikeouts per game.

Clurman, a 5-6 senior from Overland Park, Kan., started 44 games in left field and was sixth in batting average in the MIAA at .385. He was also in the top 10 in the MIAA in hits per game (1.27 H/G) and on base percentage (.453). He finished his career with 53 stolen bases, which was fifth in school history.

Sissom, a 5-11 sophomore from Kansas City, Mo., batted .345 and had a scored a team-high 55 runs as an outfielder. He also stole 26 bases, which was third in the MIAA and his 1.15 runs per game were third in the MIAA. Sissom was a second team All-MIAA selection as a designated hitter in 2003.

Wild, a 6-2 freshman from Maple Hill, Kan., batted .372 with four home runs and 22 RBI in 30 games in mostly a designated hitter role. Wild homered in two of his last three games for the Ichabods and collected four hits against Minnesota-Crookston March 15.

The Ichabods finished 26-23 overall and 15-15 in the MIAA to place sixth in the regular season standings. The Ichabods were just 3 1/2 games behind second place Emporia State.
