EMPORIA, Kan. - The Washburn Ichabods lost for the first time this
season falling in overtime 35-28 to Emporia State 35-28. The loss
drops the Ichabods to 2-1. The Ichabods will now play host to Truman
State, who lost 48-8 to Pittsburg State.
The Ichabods found themselves behind early as the Hornets would score
on a 49-yards touchdown pass. On the next drive, Dustin Hickel rushed
for a 9-yard touchdown capping an 84-yard, eight-play drive tying
the score at seven.
The Ichabods would take the lead on the first play of the second
quarter on a Hickel 1-yard touchdown run. The score was set up by
a Grant Gould interception return to the 12 yard line. The Ichabod
defense would get into the scoring act after Fletcher Terrell tipped
a Hornet pass to himself and rushed 60 yards for an interception return
making the score 21-7 Ichabods.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Hornets finished off
a 95-yard drive to cut the Ichabod lead to 21-14.
Trent Hearn finished off a 90-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown
run putting the Ichabods up 28-14. The Hornets would score two touchdowns
in the final 5:37 of the game to force overtime.
The Hornets would score on their first possession of overtime and
the Ichabods would not score.
Hearn would lead the Ichabods on the ground rushing for 133 yards
on 22 carries. It was the third straight game Hearn has reached the
century mark. Hickel passed for 160 yards on 10 of 16 passing and
Mike Odupitan had four catches for 100 yards. Joe Corcoran had 11
tackles and Morgan Dewey had nine with one sack.
