TOPEKA, Kan. - The Washburn Ichabods put up a solid fight, but could
not overcome 20 fourth quarter points falling to No. 5 ranked Pittsburg
State 37-10. With the loss, the Ichabods drop to 2-4 and 0-4 in the
MIAA and will look to rebound when they travel to Bolivar, Mo. to
take on Southwest Baptist.
The Gorillas scored first on a 22-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
The Ichabods would come right back on Conner Sabel's 23-yard field
goal to knot the score at three. The Gorillas scored a touchdown with
35 seconds left in the first half to take a 10-3 lead into the lockerroom.
Neither team would score again until the Gorillas pushed the lead
to 17-3 at the 2:20 mark of the third quarter. On the next Ichabod
drive, Trent Hearn would dive in the endzone to cut the lead to 17-10.
However the Gorillas would score 20-unanswered points scoring three
touchdowns over a five-minute span and win the game 37-10.
The Ichabods were limited to six first downs and 149 total yards.
Hearn ruhsed for 56 yards. DaWight Benning had four receptions for
63 yards and Dustin Hickel was 8 of 17 with one interception for 79
yards.
Mike Odupitan had six kickoff returns for 177 yards averaging 29.5
yards a return. On defense, Grant Gould led the Ichabods with 11 tackles
and one fumble recovery. Evin Beck and Joe Corcoran each had eight
stops and Corcoran also had an interception.
