OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics announced Tuesday that 11 members of the Washburn football team earned All-MIAA honors for the 2004 season. Washburn went 7-4 and is in postseason play for the first time since 1988 with a Mineral Water Bowl Berth.
Junior punter Curtis Massey was the only Ichabod to earn first team honors after leading the MIAA with a 41.9 yard punting average. Massey, an Arkansas City, Kan. native and Coffeyville Community College transfer, had 13 punts downed inside the 20 yard line.
Junior wide receiver Sam Sissom, junior offensive guard Rudy Su'e, sophomore defensive lineman Trey Lewis and sophomore cornerback Fletcher Terrell were named to the second team.
Sissom, a Knnsas City, Mo. native, is fifth in the MIAA with 81.2 receiving yards per game and seventh in scoring with 92 points (15 TDs, 2 2-point conversions).
Su'e, a San Diego, Calif. native and transfer from East Central (Miss.) College, started all 11 games for an Ichabod offensive line that anchored an offense that scored 33.7 points a game and averaged 414.2 yards of totaloffense.
Lewis, a Topeka, Kan. native, had 29 tackles (three for loss), a fumble forced, a fumble recovery and blocked a kick. He also had one sack on the season and was named Washburn's Defensive Lineman of the Week three times this season.
Terrell, a Minnetonka, Minn. native and transfer from Butler County Community College, made 53 tackles and had a team-high five interceptions and 13 pass break-ups. He also forced and recovered a fumble.
Junior quaterback Tyler Schuerman, freshman running back Ra'Shawn Moseley, sophomore wide receiver Mike Odupitan, junior fullback Rawshawn Bland, senior offensive tackle Tyrone Barrett and junior linebacker Grant Gould earned honorable mention honors.
Schuerman, a Riverview, Fla. native, broke the single season record for passing touchdowns with 24 this season and averaged 224.5 yards of total offense. He connected on 136 of 251 passes with only six interceptions for 1908 yards. He also rushed for 337 yards.
Moseley, a San Antonio, Texas native, became the third 1,000 yard rusher in Washburn history with 1,054 yards on 203 carries and 11 touchdowns. His 11 rushing touchdowns rank him fifth in single season history.
Odupitan, a Lake Worth, Fla. native, caught 48 passes for 697 yards and nine touchdowns. He caught three touchdowns in the season finale at Missouri Southern. and a game-winner against SBU Oct. 9.
Bland, a Lewisville, Texas native, started all 11 games and rushed for 149 yards in just 35 carries and three touchdowns.
Barrett, a Bellglade, Fla. native, started all 11 games and helped anchor an offensive line that is on pace to break the school record in points scored per game with 33.7 points a game.
Gould, a Topeka, Kan. native, led the Ichabods with 116 tackles (four for loss) and had one interception and a pass break up. His tackle total ranks fifth all-time in single season history.
