TOPEKA - The Washburn Ichabods fell in their season opener 34-27 to the Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers scored the winning touchdown with 4:55 to play in the fourth quarter to hand Washburn the loss. The Ichabods will take on Langston University next weekend on Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. in Yager Stadium.

The Ichabods opened the game with a 68-yard, 9-play touchdown dirve that was capped by a 38-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Schuerman to Sam Sissom. It was the first of two touchdown passes from the duo of Schuerman to Sissom. However, the extra point attempt missed and the Ichabods led 6-0. The Orediggers would take the ensuing kickoff and score a touchdown of their own, but like the Ichabods could not convert on the extra point.

Both teams would trade touchdown drives to wrap up the first quarter with the score locked at 13. The Ichabods scored a a 4-yard touchdown run by Trent Hearn. Mines would score the next 14 points of the game to take a 27-13 lead. The Ichabods would cut into the lead before halftime on a Ra'Shawn Moseley 13-yard scamper to decrease the margin to seven.

In the second half, the Ichabods and Orediggers would go scoreless in the third quarter. The Ichabods struck next on Sissom's second touchdown of the afternoon - a 64-yard strike from Schuerman that tied the score at 27 with 7:52 remaining. The Orediggers took the kickoff and then marched 77 yards in 11 plays as Chad Friehauf connected with Jonny Chan on a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Moseley finished the game with 108 yards rushing and Hearn finished with 71 yards. Schuerman was 14 of 23 with two tipped interceptions and 178 yards.

Sissom would finished with 113 yards receiving and three receptions for a 37.7 yard per catch average. The Ichabod defense was led by Grant Gould who had 15 tackles and an interception return of 31 yards. Adam Ewy had 12 tackles.
