TOPEKA - Ichabod head coach Craig Schurig has announced today that Roy Sims, a 6-5, 295 defensive lineman has signed a letter of intent to join the squad this spring.
"We're excited about Roy coming to Washburn," Schurig said. "We look for him to be a force on the defensive line and his joining us in time for spring ball will get him acclimated to our defense even faster."
Sims is transferring from Gavilan College in Gilroy, Calif., where he was named Most Valuable Player of the team, first team all-conference, the Coast Conference's Most Valuable Defensive Player as well as all-region, all-state and he was named a California Junior College All-America by JuCal Magazine and Third Team All-America by JCGrid Wire Magazine. He was also named Region 2 Defensive Player of the Year by the California Community College Football Coaches Association.
For the Rams this past season, he recorded 23 solo tackles, 31 assisted tackles, 19 sacks with 25 quarterback hurries, two pass breakups and an interception along with 11 tackles for loss.
At San Benito High School, Sims was named a first-team all-section pick and a two-time all-league first-team selection. He was also named the team Most Valuable Player and league’s Most Valuable Defensive lineman. He was selected team captain and a three-year starter.
He is the son of Sylvia DeLay and his anticipated major at Washburn is anthropology and pre-med.
The Ichabods finished the 2004 season with an 8-4 record winning the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Mo., over Northern State (S.D.).
