ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Washburn Ichabods fell for the first time this season coming up short in the comeback bid dropping a 48-42 decision to Central Washington. The Ichabods (3-1, 1-0 MIAA) will look to rebound this weekend against Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo.
The Ichabods found themselves down 14-0 less than eight minutes into the game as the Wildcats scored the first two touchdowns of the game. The Ichabods jumped on the scoreboard with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter as Ra'Shawn Mosley capped a 6-play, 65 yard drive cutting the score to 14-7.
Central Washington (2-2) would score of the first play of the ensuing drive as they scored on a 52-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 21-7. It would be the first seven of a total of 24-unanswered points the Wildcats would score to build the lead to 38-7 with 9:06 remaining in the first half.
The Ichabods responded as quarterback Jordan Brill connected with Jarod Tetuan on a 24-yard touchdown strike to cut the lead to 38-14. After forcing a three-and-out, the Ichabods scored with 1:27 left in the first half as Jeff Scott caught a 57-yard touchdown reception from Bill cutting the lead to 38-21.
The Wildcats received the second half with the football and after the Ichabods forced the Wildcats into putting formation, Fletcher Terrell blocked the Central Washington punt and recovered it on the Wildcats' 4-yard line, but an offsides penalty on the Ichabods on the 4th and four gave the Wildcats the first down. On that same drive, the Ichabods' Josh Looney picked off a Mike Riley pass as the Wildcat quarterback he was running out of bounds, however the officials ruled they had an inadvertent whistle giving possession back to the Wildcats. The Wildcats would continue to drive and kick a 27-yard field goal to push the lead to 41-21 with 9:05 left in the third quarter. Central Washington would add another touchdown on their next possession.
Washburn would then mount their comeback as Scott caught his second touchdown pass of the afternoon from Brill - this time a 5-yard completion to cut the lead to 48-28 with 1:05 left in the third quarter.
On the Ichabods' next possession, Washburn drove 80-yards in 10 plays as Brill hit Jake Lebahn for a 27-yard touchdown pass. It was Lebahn's first touchdown of his career.
The Ichabods defense forced a missed field goal by the Wildcats and the Ichabods took the ball back over with 4:01 remaining in the game.
Brill then led the Ichabods on another 80-yard drive hitting Lebahn with an 18-yard touchdown hook-up to cut the lead to 48-42 with 3:04 left.
The Ichabods forced the Wildcats into punt formation again, but the Ichabods were called with a roughing the kicker penalty and the Wildcats regained possession. The Ichabod defense pushed the Wildcats into another punt and the Ichabods took over with 1:11 remaining.
Brill would hit Mosley over the middle for 11-yards. After a CWU offsides penalty, Brill again hit Mosley to push the ball up to the Central Washington 47. The Ichabods would get no closer as three passes into the end zone fell incomplete handing the Ichabods the 48-42 loss.
Brill passed was 21-of-39 for 328 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes - two touchdown passes going to Lebahn and to Scott who finished with 91 and 62 yards receiving respectively. Tetuan had four receptions for 87 yards and the one touchdown reception.
On defense, the Ichabods were led by Grant Gould who had 12 tackles (six solo) including three tackles for loss and two sacks. Sam Tossie had seven tackles.
