BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Washburn Ichabods scored 42 unanswered points in a 56-21 comeback win over Southwest Baptist at Plaster Stadium Saturday. Washburn trailed 21-14 late in the first half before dominating the second half en route to victory.
Washburn, which improved to 4-1 and 2-0 in the MIAA heading into a 1 p.m. game with No. 7 Pittsburg State, suffered an early turnover to lead to an SBU touchdown just over a minute into the game on Rony Santil's touchdown reception. Grant Gould turned the tables on the Bearcats by running in a interception return 26 yards for a touchdown minutes later.
The two squads traded scores the rest of the half, including a 7-yard scoring grab by Cason Lehman and a 12-yard grab by Mike Odupitan with 26 seconds left in the half on passes by Jordan Brill. The squads were deadlocked at 21 at the break before Washburn errupted.
The Ichabods owned the second half and went up for good on Jake Lebahn's 47-yard touchdown reception from Brill at 11:13 left in the third quarter. Lebahn added another touchdown on a blocked punt return at 9:01 in the quarter.
Trent Hearn capped the scoring in the third on a 25-yard touchdown run before Ra'Shawn Mosley added a 15 yard score and Rashawn Bland added a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter to give Washburn a 35-0 margin in the second half.
Mosley led Washburn with 72 yards rushing, while A.J. Patterson and Hearn added 70 and 63 yards respectively. Patterson had a 53 yard run late in the game for WU's longest play of the day. Brill finished with 187 yards and three touchdowns on 10 of 17 passing.
Gould finished with 12 tackles, including 2.5 for loss to go along with his interception return for a score. Henry Talley was the other Ichabod in double figures with 10 tackles. Josh Looney and Fletcher Terrell added interceptions in the win.
