TOPEKA - The No. 13 ranked Washburn Ichabods held off the upset-minded Bulldogs in a 21-14 win at Yager Stadium as the Ichabods improved to 7-1 and 5-0 in the MIAA. The Ichabods will travel to Emporia State next weekend for the Turnpike Tussle as they take on the Hornets.
Truman scored first in the game converting a turnover into a touchdown after a scoreless first quarter as James Walton caught a 23-yard pass from Michael Long.
The Ichabods would not score until 43 seconds left in the half as Mike Odupitan hooked up with Jordan Brill on a 21-yard pass reception as the Ichabods drove 76 yards in 12 plays to tie the game at 7-7.
The Bulldogs took the lead on a Jerard Leverson 1-yard touchdown run with 5:31 left in the third quarter capping a 12-play 57-yard yard drive.
Washburn took the lead for good on a 31-yard run by Trent Hearn. Hearn rushed for a career-high 178 yards on 27 carries. Hearn added his second touchdown on the Ichabods' next possession that put the Ichabods up 21-14.
After forcing an Ichabod punt with 3:18 in the game, the Bulldogs drove to their own 45-yard line, but the Ichabods' Terell Cobb picked off Michael Long's pass at the Washburn 43 to end the threat and wrap up the game.
Brill passed for 249 yards and one touchdown. On defense, Grant Gould led the Ichabods with 13 tackles. He also has a tackle for loss, a pass break up and an interception he returned for 26 yards. Fletcher Terrell and Mike Gonzalez each had nine tackles.
The Ichabods outgained the Bulldogs 418 to 370 despite running 10 less plays.
