TOPEKA, Kan. - The No. 6 Washburn Ichabods improved to 9-1 and 7-0 in the MIAA with its 49-35 win over Missouri Southern. With the win, the Ichabods clinched at least a share of the MIAA title as they can clinch an outright championship with a win at Missouri Western next week.

The Ichabods jumped on the Lions as they scored touchdowns on five of its first six possessions. The first two coming on Trent Hearn runs of 3- and 24-yards.

Brandon Walker came in a quarterback and guided the Ichabods on a 10-play, 64-yard drive as he ran 11 yards for a touchdown to put the Ichabods up 21-0 with 14:12 to go in the second quarter.

Hearn rushed for his third touchdown of the afternoon on a 4-yard run. Hearn would not carry the ball the rest of the game as he would finish with 122 yards on eight carries and the three touchdowns playing only one quarter and 3:40 of the second quarter. Hearn also raised his season total to 1,035 yards becoming only the fourth Ichabod to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season and the first Ichabod to do it twice in a career.

Rawshawn Bland capped a 9-play, 95-yard drive that put the 'Bods up 35-0 entering halftime.

The Lions jumped on the board as Dartan Johnson scored on a 5-yard run. A.J. Patterson scored on a 16-yard pass from Jordan Brill to push the Ichabods back to a 42-7 lead with 4:41 left in the third quarter.

The Lions scored again as Jamison Hummel pulled down a Adam Hinspeter pass from seven yards out.

Washburn's Chris Brown, who played both defense and offense for the second straight week, scored on a 6-yard run to wrap up the Ichabod scoring. Brown finished with a game-high 129 yards on the ground on 17 carries.

Southern on a 17-yard run by Ronnell Newman and added two more scores within 2:12 of one another as they blocked two punts inside the Ichabod 20 and converted them for two touchdowns.

The Ichabods as a team rushed for 382 yards with Brown's 129, Hearn's 122 and Walker's 99 yards leading the way. The 382 yards tied a school record for most yards on the ground for a Washburn team. The last time the Ichabods had two 100 yard rushers was on Oct. 22, 1994 in a 60-28 loss to Missouri Western. Joe Schartz had 17 carries for 104 yards and Nick Cummings had 21 carries for 122 yards.

Brill was 10 for 18 with 1 touchdown and 201 yards passing. Cason Lehman had three receptions for 72 yards to lead all receivers.

Mike Gonzalez led the Ichabods with 12 tackles. Fletcher Terrell had two interceptions and one solo tackle.

Overall, the Ichabods outgained the Lions 583 to 441 overall and 382 to 148 on the ground.
