ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The No. 5 Washburn Ichabods finished up the regular season in heartbreaking fashion as they fell 28-21 in overtime at Missouri Western. However, with Central Missouri's 83-21 win over Pittsburg State, the Ichabods will not share the MIAA title as the Ichabods finished the conference slate with a 7-1 record. It is the first conference title of any kind for the Washburn football program since the 1983 team won the CSIC championship. The Ichabods will now find out its postseason fate at noon tomorrow as the NCAA Division II Championship selection show will air Sunday at noon on ESPN News.
The Ichabods jumped out to an early 14-0 lead 3:15 into the game as Trent Hearn rushed for his 17th and 18th touchdowns of the season. The Griffons would cut the score to 14-7 and eventually tie the score midway through the second quarter.
The Ichabods committed five turnovers, including an interception in the overtime period and two other turnovers inside the Griffon 30 yard line.
Hearn rushed for 107 yards on 23 carries raising his season total to 1,142 yards, trailing Dino DeLisa on the single-season record book, who had 1,185 in 1983.
Jordan Brill became Washburn's single season record holder in passing yards lifting his total to 2,479 yards passing Barry Griffith's mark of 2,338 in 1988.
On defense, the Ichabods were led by Mike Gonzalez and Adam Ewy who each had 14 tackles. Grant Gould had 11 including eight solo tackles. Fletcher Terrell had eight tackles including an interception and three pass break ups giving him 58 for his career setting a new NCAA Division II record for the most in a career. He passed Rob Keefe of Mercyhurst who had 56 for his career.
