Hornets spoil Washburn senior day

Topeka - Arch-rival Emporia State ruined Senior Day for 11 Washburn seniors with a 35-21 victory at Moore Bowl Saturday afternoon.

Washburn looked good early, taking their second possession 58 yards in eight plays. Brandon Rainer capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown to lift the Ichabods to a 7-0 lead.

Emporia State responded, when DeAngelo Evans caught fire. Evans took the second play of the following drive 62 yards for a score, while finishing up with 225 yards on 19 carries.

Corey Crain took an option pitch 11 yards to tie the game at 14, when Evans answered again. Evans rushed for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Hornets a 21-14 lead with 47 seconds to go in the first half.

The Hornets racked up a 35-14 lead after taking their first two possessions of the half for touchdowns. Washburn got their final score with a 2-yard scamper by Tyler Schuerman.

Schuerman broke the Washburn total offense record with 2,644 yards. He also bettered his school-record rushing touchdown mark to 16. Brandon Rainer rushed 15 times for a team-high 70 yards.

The Ichabods finished at 5-6 (3-6 MIAA), while the Hornets improved to 6-5 (5-4 MIAA).
