The Washburn Ichabods provided a dominating performance in their
2000 opener Saturday against Wisconsin-Lacrosse. The Ichabods downed
the Eagles 26-6 in the 108 degree heat for their third-straight season
opening victory.
Freshman quarterback Tyler Schuerman wasn't showing his age in his
first start for Washburn. Schuerman rushed for 102 yards and passed
for 97 more, becoming the first Washburn player since Willie Sapp
in 1997 to rush for over 100 yards.
Chad Todd kicked his first of a Washburn record-tying four field
goals with a 39-yarder to open the scoring at 7:42 in the first quarter.
Brandon Rainer became the first Ichabod to score a touchdown this
season with 1-yard score with 2:42 left in the first.
Todd added three more field goals, including a 47-yard kick to give
Washburn a 19-0 lead after three quarters. The 47-yard kick tied a
personal best.
Corey Crain added an 18-yard touchdown with 8:19 left in the ballgame,
while Mike Smith put the Eagles on the board with a 2-yard score with
2:22 to play.
Rainer ran 11 times for 59 yards, while Colon McNeal caught three
passes for 53 yards.
The Ichabod defense forced four turnovers, while Clarence Williams
and Chris Simmons came up with six tackles apiece. Simmons also picked
of a pass in his first start at safety.
Up next for the Ichabods are the Lincoln Blue Tigers in Jefferson
City, Mo. on Sept. 9. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
