Ichabods fall for first time in 2000

The Washburn Ichabod football team tasted defeat for the first time this season in their MIAA home opener 23-13 against Missouri Western in Moore Bowl.

Washburn trailed 3-0 late in the first half, before Brandon Rainer put the Ichabods on the scoreboard with a 10-yard touchdown with 2:47 left.

The Ichabods looked to go up 13-3 on a 33-yard run by quarterback Tyler Schuerman. The play was called back on a holding penalty and momentum shifted to the Griffons.
Missouri Western scored the next 20 points in the ballgame, taking a 23-7 lead with 4:43 left on a 13-yard pass to Jerris Evans from Kasey Waterman.

Washburn tried to rally back with a pass to Colon McNeal. McNeal caught the ball at the Missouri Western 45, ran it to the 25 before pitching it to Chris Whittle. Whittle took it into the end zone, but the attempt at a two-point conversion failed.

Brandon Rainer rushed for 105 yards on 19 carries, Tyler Schuerman passed for 220 yards on 11 of 17 passing, while Colon McNeal had a career-high 149 receiving yards on 7 catches. Brandon Perry led Missouri Western with 195 yards on 30 carries.

Washburn fell to 3-1, (1-1 MIAA), while Missouri Western improved to 2-2 and 2-0 in the MIAA. Next Saturday the Ichabods travel to Warrensburg, Mo. to take on Central Missouri State at 2 p.m.
