The Washburn Ichabods made an excellent comeback attempt, but fell short in a 31-28 lost to Pittsburg State at Carnie Smith Stadium Saturday.

The Gorillas' Levi Neville took the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown before the Ichabods got two early scores. Tyler Schuerman ran in two touchdowns of 3 and 16 yards, to give him 11 scores on the ground this season. The touchdowns gave Washburn a 14-7 lead to end the first quarter.

Pittsburg State struck back and scored the next 24 points in the ballgame, including a 25-yard field goal by Gary Kral that gave PSU a 31-14 lead with 8:21 to go in the ballgame. After the two squads exchanged turnovers, Corey Crain took a pitch from Schuerman on fourth down and ran it 19 yards for a touchdown.

Then the Ichabods got right back in the ballgame, when Anthony Chapman fumbled on the Gorillas' next possession. Garett Wrecke scooped up the ball and dashed 51 yards for a score to help the Ichabods close the gap 31-28.

Washburn nearly stopped the Gorillas on third down, but PSU's Lateef Walker hit Jeff Untereker for only his second completion of the game for a first down. Walker ran for another first down two plays later to preserve the victory for Pitt State.

Schuerman passed for 188 yards and ran for 53 more, while surrendering four interceptions in the loss. Schuerman broke Brandon Rainer's freshman rushing record late in the game. Schuerman now has 501 yards on the season, while he is just three rushing touchdowns shy of a school record.
