Ichabods use balanced attack to pound Southwest Baptist on Homecoming

The Washburn Ichabods improved to 5-2 and 3-2 in MIAA play with a 58-21 Homecoming victory over Southwest Baptist in Moore Bowl Saturday.

Joe Banks got the Ichabods on the board first with a 49-yard touchdown on the Ichabods' first play from scrimmage, after stopping the Bearcats on defense. After Southwest Baptist answered with a touchdown with 6:28 left in the first to take a 7-6 lead, Washburn errupted for 24 more points to take a 30-14 lead at the half.

The Ichabods opened the second half by taking the ball 54 yards in three plays, capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Tyler Schuerman. The Ichabods added three more scores in the second half, including Zac Nally's first touchdown of 30 yards with 1:35 to go.

Schuerman went 14-of-19 passing for a career-high 306 yards and three touchdowns, whlie Colon McNeal caught six passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Darryl Humphrey led the rushing attack with 53 yards on four carries.

With his rushing touchdown in the third quarter, Schuerman broke teammate Brandon Rainer's freshman rushing touchdown. The touchdown was Schuerman's nine on the ground this season, while Rainer had eight in 1998.

Washburn will hit the road next Saturday with a 2 p.m. showdown against Pittsburg State. The game will be homecoming for the Gorillas at Carnie Smith Stadium. .
