The Ichabods opened the MIAA season with a
24-22 win over Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo.
The Ichabods fans had hardly got to their seats
as Missouri Southern took the opening kickoff and on the Lions second
play, watched the Lions' Antonio Whitney run 87 yards for the first
score of the ball game.
After trading three-and-outs, the Lions then
marched 77 yards in six plays for another score to take a 13-0 lead.
Washburn's (3-0, 1-0 MIAA) first score would
come at the 5:51 mark of the second quarter with a 66-yard drive on
five plays capped by a Brandon Rainer 1-yd touchdown run.
After the Ichabod defense held the Lions (0-3,
0-1 MIAA) to no yards in three plays, the Lions were forced to punt.
The Ichabods would then march 64 yards in nine plays with Tyler Schuerman
completing his first collegiate touchdown pass to Joe Banks for 27
yards. The previous play, Schuerman hooked up with Banks for a 16-yd
touchdown pass, but a holding penalty forced the Ichabods back 11-yards
to set up the second pass.
Missouri Southern would then take the lead
going into the half driving 64 yards in nine plays in 2:16 seconds
to lead 14-12 at the break.
The Ichabods took the second half kickoff and
Chad Todd nailed a 41-yd field goal to put the Ichabods on top. His
field goal was his 34th of his career tying Nick Kresic's mark for
made field goals in a career. Todd also passed Dino DeLisa on the
all-time scoring list moving into second place with 176 career points.
DeLisa had 174 in his Washburn career from 1983-85.
The Schuerman-Banks combo connected again with
6:23 left in the third quarter for a 29-yd touchdown pass completing
a 93-yd, 10-play drive.
The Lions would finish the scoring with a 32-yd
field goal by Eddie Wright.
For the game, the Ichabods were led on the
ground by Brandon Rainer who had 90 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.
Schuerman ran for 71 on 19 carries. Schuerman was 8 of 27 passing
for 147 yards and his first two Washburn touchdown passes. Joe Banks
had four receptions for 69 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Ryan Huske and Chad Gordon each
had seven tackles. Dan Wilson had two sacks for 17 yards.
The Ichabods are home next against Missouri
Western at 6 p.m. on Sept. 23. The Griffons shutout Missouri-Rolla
63-0 to open MIAA play.
