Kirksville, Mo. - The Ichabods dropped a heartbreaker to Truman State
University 45-42 watching their record fall to 5-5, 3-5 MIAA, with
arch-rival coming to Topeka for the season-ending finale. The Bulldogs
finished the game with a nine-play, 85-yard drive to go up 45-42 with
1:05 remaining. The Ichabods had a chance and drove to their own 45
before an incompletion turned the ball over to the Bulldogs who ran
out the clock.
The Ichabods took their opening possession of the game and drove 54
yards on nine plays to go up 7-0. Junior fullback Brandon Rainer scored
on a one-yard run. On the afternoon, Rainer rushed for 43 yards on
nine carries.
The Bulldogs would tie the game on the following kickoff as Alfonso
Pugh took the kickoff 82 yards to tie the score.
The Ichabods came right back with red-shirt freshman Tyler Schuerman
running for the first of his four touchdown runs on the afternoon.
Schuerman would break Dino DeLisa's rushing touchdown record in one
season of 14 with his 15th of the season on a nine-yard touchdown
run midway through the fourth quarter. Schuerman would leave the game
late in the fourth quarter with an injury after completing 14 of 22
passes for 168 yards and rushing 29 times for 113 yards and his four
touchdowns.
The Ichabods would go up 21-7 on another Schuerman touchdown run
right before the half.
On Truman's first possession of the second half, the Bulldogs would
cut the Ichabod lead to seven on a Eric Howe to Kevin Collins touchdown
pass. Both teams would trade drives and the Bulldogs would cut the
lead to four on a 34-yd field goal by Austin Leeper. The Bulldogs
would take the lead on a 93-yd pass reception 31-21.
Schuerman would lead the Ichabods back on a 62-yd drive with his third
touchdown of the afternnon putting the Bods within three, 31-28.
Truman would score a pair of touchdowns including the 1-yd run by
Steve Wilson to put the Bulldogs up for good.
The Ichabods would pile up 30 first downs and 424 yards in total
offense.
Junior wide receiver Colon McNeal had six catches for 89 yards. On
the defensive side, junior free safety Jeremy Potts and senior linebacker
had six tackels. Senior defensive back Teddy Remais had one interception.
The Ichabods will finish the season wtih Emporia State on Nov. 11.
It will be the final game for the Ichabod seniors.
