Washburn Athletics Director Loren Ferré has announced today
that Craig Schurig has been named the head football coach of the Ichabods.
Schurig replaces Tony DeMeo who resigned after eight seasons as the
Ichabod head coach.
Im very excited to have Craig on board, Ferré
said. He comes from a winning program and knows what it takes
to win in this conference. His skills as a recruiter and coach are
outstanding and we are excited about the future of Ichabod football.
Schurig spent nine seasons as a member of Pittsburg States
coaching staff. He recently finished his sixth season as the Gorillas
defensive back coach. Prior to that he spent three seasons working
with the Pitt State tight ends. He has spent the last seven seasons
recruiting Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma high schools and junior colleges.
While on the Gorillas coaching staff, Schurig was a part of a NCAA
national finalist squad in 1995, four MIAA Championship teams and
eight NCAA Division II playoff teams. He helped guide one of the top
defenses in Division II including the top-ranked defensive squad in
1999. He was also the punt team coordinator for the past six seasons.
Before arriving at Pittsburg State, Shurig spent the 1993 season
as a graduate assistant coach at his alma alter, Colorado School of
Mines after serving as a volunteer assistant in 1992.
A member of the American Football Coaches Association, Schurig has
coached nine All-Conference players and three All-Americans. Schurig,
a Willingboro, N.J., native, was a four-year letterman as a defensive
back at Colorado Mines, earning second-team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference honors as a senior. He graduated in 1987 with a bachelors
degree in petroleum engineering.
Schurig earned a masters degree in physical education at Pittsburg
State in 1996. Craig and his wife, Louisa, have a daughter, Samantha,
and two sons, Mitchell and Michael.
