TOPEKA - The Washburn Ichabods fell to the No. 3 Pittsburg State Gorillas 47-14 in their MIAA opener in Moore Bowl. With the loss, the Ichabods fell to 0-3 and will now travel to Joplin, Mo. to take on Missouri Southern on Sept. 28.

The Gorillas took the opening kickoff and drove 86 yards in 12 plays to take an early 7-0 lead. Pitt State would then score a pair of touchdowns and lead 21-0 after one quarter.

The Ichabods would cross the galena on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Hickel to tight end Jacob Barth capping a 15-play, 70-yard drive.

The Gorillas would then score on its ensuing drive to take oa 28-6 lead. The Ichabods would counter back with a seven play, 80-yard drive on a Hickel 20-yard touchdown scamper. With 17 seconds left, Gorillas quarterback Neal Philpot would score on a three-yard run and the Gorillas would take a 35-14 lead into the break.

The Ichabods would be shutout in the second half as the Gorillas would add a touchdown, a safety and a field goal to take the 47-14 win. It was the 23rd time the Ichabods were topped by the Gorillas.

Hickel passed for 151 yards and ran for 39. Cason Lehman had four receptions for 56 yards and DaWight Benning had three catches for 59. Joe Corcoran recorded 14 tackles after recording 18 and 16 tackles respectively in his previous two games. Morgan Dewey had 12 and Grant Gould had 10.
