JOPLIN - The Washburn Ichabods started the season 0-4 for the first time since 1994 as they were topped by the Missouri Southern Lions 52-28.

The Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Ichabods tied right before the end of the quarter on a 2-yard Cason Lehman run. After a Lions touchdown, the Ichabods would score two touchdowns on freshman wide receiver Sam Sissom grabs to take a 21-14 lead. Sissom broke the school record for freshman touchdown receptions in a season with five and broke the freshman record for most TD receptions in a game with three. Sissom finished the game with five catches for 179 yards.

Right before the half, the Lions would cut the lead to four on a field goal.

The Lions would score 28 more unanswered points to take a 38-21 lead. The Ichabods would rebound with Sissom's third touchdown reception - a 63-yard scamper on a reception from quarterback Dustin Hickel to cut the lead to 38-28, but that was as close the Ichabods would get as the Lions would add two more scores.

The Lions would rack up 33 first downs and 646 yards of total offense compared to 371 for the Ichabods as senior quarterback Josh Chapman broke an MIAA record with 533 total offensive yards.

Junior Jake Lawrence led the Ichabods on the ground with 55 yards on 13 carries and Hickel passed for 241 yards on 14 of 29 passing with three touchdown passes. On defense, junior linebacker Morgan Dewey and junior cornerback Darold Smith each had 10 tackles.
