TOPEKA - For the second straight season, the Ichabods fall in a heartbreaker
on homecoming. This season it was at the hands of Missouri Western
as the Griffons overcame a 14-point fourth quarter by the Ichabods
to win in doubleovertime 34-28. Last season, Austin Leeper hit a 46-yard
field goal as time expired to top the Ichabods 27-26.
The Griffons jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Javon Leong's 24-yard touchdown
reception. He held on for the catch despite breaking his femur on
the play.
The Ichabods would come back on their ensuing drive as Sam Sissom
caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Hickel. Sissom would go
on to catch three touchdowns on the day finishing with eight catches
for 91 yards and the three scores. He has now caught 10 touchdowns
this season.
The Ichabods and the Griffons would each go scoreless in the third
quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Sissom caught touchdown passes of 20- and
8-yards from Hickel that sandwiched Adam Ziesel's score.
In the overtime period, The Ichabods scored on Cason Lehman's 22-yard
touchdown reception on a third and seven from the 22. The Griffons
would respond with a LaMont Theus 1-yard touchdown run.
In the second overtime, the Ichabods were on defense first and The
Griffons scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Michael Cooper to
Adam Ziesel on a fourth and 25 from the 25. However, the extra point
attempt was fumbled.
The Ichabods' Hickel was picked off by Andre Burns to end the game.
Hickel finished with 67 yards rushing on 16 carries and passed for
four touchdowns completing 20 of 42 passes for 319 yards. Mike Odupitan
had 119 receiving yards and five receptions.
The Ichabods were led on defense by Joe Corcoran with 10 tackles.
Josh Looney had two sacks for 25 yards and nine tackles total.
The Ichabods will now host Emporia State for Senior Day on Nov. 2. Game
time is set for 1 p.m There will also be a special halftime ceremony
where groud will be broked for the new stadium that will begin construction
following the game. You can hear all the action starting at 12:30 p.m.
