Ichabods win season opener on the road

The Washburn Ichabods opened the season with a 24-21win over the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.The loss for the Eagles was only the eighth loss at home in the 90's for Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

The Ichabods struck first on a 28-yd touchdown pass from quarterback Barry Galbraith to wide receiver Marc Nardella. The drive covered 90 yards in eight plays.

The Eagles came storming back, scoring on a 4-yard run by Jared Arn. Arn finished with 255 yards rushing on the afternoon, the second highest total by an Eagles running back.

The Ichabods went into the half up 9-7 on a 27-yd field goal with 30 seconds left in the half.

After a 66-yd run by Corey Crain, the Ichabods found themselves up 17-7, but on the first play from scrimmage after the kick off, Arn broke through the Ichabods’ defense for an 83-yd touchdown run.

The Eagles took the lead 24-21 on a Joe Rivard 1-yd touchdown run. It took the Eagles four tries from less than one yard out to score.

The Ichabods capped out the scoring on a 2-yd touchdown run by Galbraith with 11:39 left in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles did have one last chance with the ball on their own 40, but a deep pass down the field was picked off by Ted Remais as time ran out.

On the afternoon, Galbraith was 11-23 for 150 yards and one touchdown. He also carried the ball 16 times for 41 yards. Leading the ‘Bods on the ground was Crain who pilled up 84 yards on three carries. Nardella recorded four catches for 69 yards.

On defense, Corey Phipps recorded 15 tackles (nine solos, 6 assists) including three tackles for loss, and a sack.

The win was the Ichabods’ first season opening win on the road since 1990 when they beat Missouri-Rolla 13-7.
