Corey Phipps named MIAA Player of the Week

Junior linebacker Corey Phipps from Olathe, Kan., was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in a 24-21 victory at Wisconsin-Lacrosse Saturday (Sept. 4).

Phipps recorded career bests with 15 total tackles and nine solo stops to lead the Washburn defense. He also forced a fumble on a Wisconsin-Lacrosse sack and recorded three tackles for loss, including a 12-yard sack.

"Last spring Corey really came on as the linebacker we recruited and thought he could be," said Washburn head coach Tony DeMeo. "We're really proud of his efforts. This is just the tip of the ice berg for Corey and we're expecting great things from him."

Phipps is the first Ichabod to win MIAA Player of the Week honors since Marc Nardella won Offensive Player of the Week honors Oct. 17 against Missouri Western last season.

Phipps Line: 9 Unassisted Tackles, 6 Assisted Tackles, 15 Total Tackles, 3 Tackles for 16 Yards Lost, 1 Forced Fumble, 1 Sack for 12 Yards
