Ichabods place 3 on All-MIAA Golf Team
April 19, 2006
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The top three teams in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings combined to put eight players on the 2005-06 All-MIAA Golf Team.
The All-MIAA Team is selected based on a point system determined by the players' finish at the five conference-sanctioned events played this season -- two in the fall and three in the spring.
The lowest scorer in each meet is awarded 10 points, while the 10th lowest is given one point. This is the ninth season the system has been used to determine the honorees.
MIAA Champion Missouri Western State University (39 points) had two players on the list, while runner-up Washburn University (35 points) and third-place Central Missouri State University (33 points) accounted for three each.
The Griffons have the only four-time All-MIAA honoree in senior Brice Garnett. Garnett also was the top scoring player on the team, which earns him the newly-created MIAA Player of the Year award.
He was joined on the team by sophomore teammate Daniel Cordray. Garnett (three) and Cordray (one) combined to give the MWSU the top finisher in each of the last four MIAA-sanctioned events in 2005-06.
Central Missouri State sophomore Jon Sauer was the only non-Griffon to get maximum points in an conference event, as he made the All-MIAA list for the second time in as many seasons. He was joined by a pair of Mule teammates -- junior Danny Markham and freshman Ty Needels.
Washburn had a pair of repeat selections to the list among its trio. Senior Matt Warnock made it again after earning all-conference recognition in 2003-04, while junior Jeremiah Nelson has back-to-back selections. Matt Ewald joined CMSU's Needels as the only freshmen to make the team.
Garnett, Sauer and Nelson were the only players to score points in each of the five events.
Junior Tommy Clifford of Missouri Southern (24 points) and junior Jesse Helms of Truman (17 points) round out the all-conference list.
Western's Jim Perry, in his fifth season guiding the Griffons, earned MIAA Coach of the Year. He helped guide the school to its first MIAA men's golf title since 1996, and just the second overall.
