SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods defended their title at the
Drury University/Deerfield Inn Fall Classic in dramatic fashion
winning a one hole team playoff over Central Oklahoma. It was the
third win in a row for the Ichabods as the team has posted wins at the
Northeastern State, Southwest Baptist and now Drury Classics for a
three-tournament win streak. Both the Ichabods and the Bronchos tied
with team scores of 580, but the Ichabods brought back the
championship trophy.
Washburn’s Matt Ewald won the event with a 5-under 139 (68-71). Ryan
Deutsch finished second for the third straight tournament posting a 4-
under 140 (71-69). Sam Wempe finished in a tie for 28th with a 7-over
151 (78-73) and Taylor Dunham finished 38th with an 8-over 152 (74-78).
On the playoff hole, both Washburn and Central Oklahoma sent all five
members of their team out – three in one group and two with the other
and vice-versa. The Ichabods recorded three pars and two bogies,
including Ewald’s 15-foot put for par and John Robbins’ 15-foot par
saving put. Robbins was DQ’ed on a ruling making him ineligible for
the team scores for the second round. The other par was recorded by
Wempe for the Ichabods.
Washburn will be back in action next weekend at the Pittsburg State
University Invitational Oct. 9-10 at Crestwood Country Club.
