TOPEKA, Kan. - Washburn Ichabod golfers Matt Ewald and Matt Lazzo carded a pair of 4-under 67s to lead Washburn to a 16-shot lead after the first round of the Washburn Invitiational at Topeka Country Club. Today's tournament is the first of the spring season which count for the MIAA standings. Washburn leads the MIAA standings after two of the five scheduled events this season. They lead Central Missouri and Missouri Western in the standings by four points each.
Washburn's team total of 277 was 7-under par as Ryan Deutsch is tied for sixth with an even 71 while John Robbins is tied for ninth with a 1-over 72 and Taylor Dunham's 4-over 75 ties him for 17th. They lead Missouri Southern who recorded a team score of 293 lead by Eric Byers' even-par 71. The 277 is the lowest team total at the Washburn Invitational topping the 277 scored in the second round of the event on April 5, 2005 when the Ichabods recorded a 290 leading to a two-day total of 590, which won the invite.
The Washburn No. 2 team is tied for sixth with a team score of 302. Daniel Hersch is tied for 12th after posting a 2-over 73.
The invitational will conclude tomorrow starting at 8:38 a.m.
