Ichabods win Washburn Invitational, "B" team finishes in tie for 2nd

TOPEKA, KAN. - The Washburn Ichabod golf team defended their team championship from 2005 at the Washburn Invitational played at Topeka Country Club. The Ichabods won the event with a team total of 573, 17 shots better than Central Missouri and the Washburn "B" team who tallied team scores of 590.

Washburn's Matt Lazzo and Matt Ewald finished in a tie for second place after each carded a 3-over 74 on Tuesday. Central Missouri's Justin Yoder, who was second entering today's action, fired an even-par 71 to win the tournament by two strokes. In a playoff for second place between the two Washburn golfers, Lazzo recorded a par on the first playoff hole to take the second place plaque home.

Ryan Deutsch finished in seventh place for the Ichabods with a 145. John Robbins tied for eighth with a 146 and Taylor Dunham placed in a tie for 15 th with a 149.

The Washburn "B" team recorded the low round of the day with a team total off 288 paced by Sam Wempe's fourth place overall finish and second day low round of 4-under 67. Daniel Hersch shot an even par 71 tallying a 144 for the tournament which placed in in sixth place. Dustin Yeager finished in a tie for 17 th with a 150 two round score while Spencer Hemmingway finished in a tie for 24 th with a 154.

With the win for the Ichabods, they retain their first place hold in the MIAA standings increasing their lead to five points ahead of Central Missouri. The Ichabods have 24 points, leading Central Missouri with 19. Following the Mules is Missouri Western with 17, Missouri Southern with 16, trailed by Southwest Baptist with 10.5, Fort Hays State with 10.0, Truman with 7 and Pittsburg State with 4.5.

The Ichabods will be back in action next at the Missouri Southern Invitational, at Loma Linda Country Club in Joplin, Mo. on April 2-3.
