finish 12th at national tournament

DELAND, Fla.- The Washburn golf team fired a 303 to finish in 12th place Saturday at 1235 (323-306-303-303) at the NCAA Division II National Tournament at Victoria Hills Golf Club. The finish was the best for the Ichabods in school history (16th in 2003 was previous best) after opening the tournament in 18th place.
Sophomore Matt Warnock (Liberty, Mo.) led Washburn with a 298 (+10) total after shooting a 73 to finish in 12th place individually. He finished the week with seven birdies, 17 bogeys and 48 pars. Warnock’s finish was the best by a Washburn individual in school history in NCAA Division II national tournament play and earned him Most Valuable Player honors with a 74.9 stroke average in 2003-04.
Matt Johnston (Grantville, Kan.) fired a third straight 74 for a 302 (+14) total to move into a tie for 16th place. He had eight birdies, 22 bogeys and 42 pars in the 72-hole tournament.
Chris McGown (Mound City, Kan.) carded a 77 for a 318 total, while Paul Resner (Emporia, Kan.) shot a 79 to finish with a 319. Garrett Donovan (Rossville, Kan.) carded an 81 to finish with a 326.
The Ichabods, who won the MIAA team title and the Central Regional title, competed in the NCAA Division II national tournament for the second straight year. The Ichabods finished 16th in the national tournament at Sunriver, Ore. in 2003.
