Washburn three shots back at National Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga - The Washburn golf team fired a 6-over 290 to move into a tie for sixth after one round of the NCAA Division II National Golf Tournament at The Club at Savannah Harbor Tuesday. The Ichabods were three shots back of leader Northern Kentucky's 287. Eight teams had not completed action and Washburn was tied for fourth among teams that finished.

Junior Jeremiah Nelson (McPherson, Kan.) was in second and tied for first among players completing their rounds with a 3-under 68. Nelson carded three birdies and an eagle on the back nine to fire a 30. He chipped in for an eagle on the par four No. 14, which played 318 yards.

Senior Chris McGown (Mound City, Kan.) was tied for 12th at even par 72. Senior Paul Resner (Emporia, Kan.) fired a 75, while junior Matt Warnock (Liberty, Mo.) and freshman Ryan Deutsch (Topeka, Kan.) fired a 76 and 77 respectively.

The Ichabods will be in action starting again tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) for the second of four rounds in the tournament. Washburn is trying to improve on its school-best 12th place finish in last year's national tournament.
