Ichabods place 3 on All-MIAA squad; Hamilton named coach of the year

Overland Park,, Kan - The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association champion Washburn Ichabods (41.5 points in the MIAA standings) had three players earn honors on the 2002-03 All-MIAA Golf Team.

The Ichabods won the MIAA championship after tying for second in the regularseason-ending MIAA Tournament on Tuesday (April 29) in Lawrence, Kan. The championship also qualifies WU to play in the NCAA Division II Central/Great Lakes Super Regional at Bolivar, Mo., May 5-7.
WU is represented by seniors Derek Dultmeier and Cam Hubbard, along with junior Garrett Donovan. Dultmeier has been the Ichabods' low scorer in their last three events, earning medalist honors twice and finishing sixth at the MIAA meet. Donovan carded a four-over 112 in 27 holes played Tuesday to rally WU. The trio is the first to earn all-MIAA honors since Mike Roe was named to the team during the 98-99 school year.

The All-MIAA Team is selected based on a point system determined by the players' finish at the five conference-sanctioned events played this season ú two in the fall and three in the spring.The lowest scorer in each meet is awarded 10 points, while the 10th lowest is given one point. This is the seventh year the system has been used to determine the honorees.

Four players earned All-MIAA recognition for the second time in their careers. Seniors Mickey Carpenter and Kyle Long from league runner-up Missouri Southern (40.5 points) along with sophomore Nick Layman of Southwest Baptist (25 points) were repeaters from last season, while junior Dusty Smith of SBU is back after making the list as a freshman in 2000-01.

Long earned medalist honors at the MIAA meet with a 3-over par 219 over 54 holes.
Freshman Brice Garnett of Missouri Western (33 points) was the only player to be in the top 10 in all five MIAA events this season.

Rounding out the team are sophomores Brian Doolan and Jeff Vineyard of Central Missouri State (34 points), junior Johnathon Ziolo of Pittsburg State (12 points) andjunior Jason Cahill of Missouri-Rolla (9 points).

WU's Doug Hamilton, in his first season leading the Ichabods, was selected as the MIAA Coach of the Year.
