Ichabods nearly spoil K-State's opener in triple overtime exhibition loss

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Ichabods came out for their second exhibition game against a Big 12 school in three nights and nearly pulled off an upset in Kansas State’s first preseason game in a 94-90 triple-overtime loss Saturday night at Bramlage Coliseum. Washburn will take on the alumni team Friday at 7 p.m. and will tip off the regular season November 15 against Kansas Wesleyan. Admission for the exhibition against the alumni is free but canned food donations will be accepted.
Sophomore forward Paul Byers shot 11-for-15 and led WU with 26 points and senior guard Michael Williams added 17. Junior forward Brady Sisk had 16 points and junior guard Andrew Meile had 12. Byers had a double-double with 10 rebounds and junior forward Kyle Snyder led all players with 11 boards.
The Ichabods led for most of the first half and up until the 15:04 point of the second half when the Wildcats tied it at 49-49. The Ichabods went back on top after that and held on until the 5:35 mark when a free throw from Clent Stewart made it 61-60. Junior guard Andrew Meile hit a jumper on the other end to give the lead back to WU. KSU got the basket back but then junior guard Grant Hargett slammed in a dunk on a fast break and Meile nailed a 3-pointer to put the Ichabods up by two at 2:15. Williams then hit a free throw but K-State answered with three free throws in the final 1:36.
The Wildcats had a chance to win in regulation but David Hoskins missed a shot at the buzzer.
In the first overtime the two teams traded the lead throughout. Cartier Martin’s shot with 55 seconds left gave the Wildcats a three-point lead until Meile went down the court and hit a 3 to tie it. Hargett got a steal with 10 seconds left and called a timeout while on the ground. Williams’ shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim and sent the game into double-overtime.
The Wildcats built a three-point lead with a minute left but Williams answered that with a 3 of this own. Once again, the ’Bods had a chance to win it but Byers’ jumper missed as time ran out.
The Wildcats made seven free throws in the third overtime to put the game out of reach for Washburn and spoil head coach Bob Chipman’s return to his alma mater.
The Ichabods took a 33-26 lead into the locker room. The Ichabods shot 43 percent in the opening 20 minutes while K-State turned in just a 29 percent effort. Despite the difference in shooting percentage, Washburn was never able to build more than a nine-point lead.
Washburn led 5-2 at the first media timeout four minutes into the game. The Ichabods built a 19-14 lead at 7:35 and then the ’Bods built their largest lead, nine points at 5:57.
Washburn out-rebounded the Wildcats 23-18 at the half with Snyder and Byers each pulling in five. K-State went 0-for-10 from 3-point range in the half and 10-for-34 from the field. The Ichabods were 13-for-30 overall and 2-for-6 from long distance.
For the game the Ichabods outshot the Wildcats 41 percent to 33 percent and out-rebounded them 62-59. K-State shot 47 free throws while the Ichabods shot just 20 from the free throw line.
K-State was led by Hoskins with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Cartier Martin had just one point in the first half but then had 18 points the rest of the way. Ten of them came on 14 trips to the free throw line.
