Hargett’s free throws help Ichabods survive season-opening scare
November 15, 2006
TOPEKA - Junior guard Grant Hargett hit a pair of free throws with three seconds left in regulation to lead Washburn to a 77-72 double-overtime win over Kansas Wesleyan in the season opener for the Ichabods. KWU’s Trey Sims hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to give KWU the lead and as the Ichabods, down 58-56, were trying to get the ball up the court for a last-second shot, Hargett was fouled with WU in the double bonus. Making his Ichabod debut, Hargett sunk both shots and sent the game into overtime. The two teams each scored eight points in the first overtime and then the Ichabods outscored KWU 11-6 in the second extra period to get the win. Junior forward Brady Sisk came off the bench to lead Washburn with 19 points and had five rebounds. Senior guard Michael Williams had 16 points, senior forward Frank Phifer had 14 and sophomore forward Paul Byers had 10. Williams and Phifer were each making their Washburn debut.

Up next for the Ichabods
Washburn will take on NCAA Division I Nevada-Las Vegas Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. Central/7:30 Pacific. That game will be the fourth in seven days for the Ichabods. Last year WU played the Runnin’ Rebels in an exhibition game but this year it will count. UNLV coach Lon Kruger and Washburn coach Bob Chipman played together at Kansas State.
Phifer gives Ichabods inside presence, puts up double-double against KU
After breaking his ankle in the preseason last year, Phifer made his Ichabod debut Wednesday by scoring 14 points against Kansas Wesleyan. He was 6-for-7 from the free throw line in the game. He shot 5-for-10 in a start against No. 3 Kansas in an exhibition earlier this year. He got to the free throw line 14 times and made 12 of them for an 86 percent effort. He also pulled in 11 rebounds to lead all players in that category. Against K-State he was kept to just eight points but he finished the exhibition season strong with 20 against the Alumni. Phifer transferred to WU last year from Kentucky Wesleyan and was expected to start in the post. Prio to Wednesday, his last appearance in a regular season game came while at Kentucky Wesleyan in 2004-05.
Byers climbs WU career block chart after strong freshman season
Returning for his sophomore season is forward Paul Byers. Playing all 26 games with 19 starts, he led the Ichabods last year with 31 blocks, the seventh highest single-season total at WU and 14th highest career total. He can get near the Washburn top-five with a repeat performance this year.
Byers had 10 points in the opener Wednesday against KWU. In the three exhibition games this fall he had 13.0 points a game and 5.7 rebounds. He had nine assists, one block and two steals.
Fisher is lone returning senior for Ichabods
Senior Kyle Fisher will be the only senior on WU’s squad with Ichabod playing experience. Though he only started seven games last year, Fisher started all four in China. During his junior year he averaged 5.1 points per game and 1.8 rebounds. He reached double figures three times and had a career-high 14 points against Newman.
Forward Frank Phifer is a senior who transferred to WU last year and then took a medical redshirt before the season started. Michael Williams, a senior guard, comes to WU after a year at Northern Iowa.
Meile has solid exhibition season as he looks to return as team leader
Junior Andrew Meile comes back for his third year as the only returning starter at guard. In three exhibitions this year he had 12.7 points a game, 3.7 rebounds and led WU with seven steals. Meile averaged 8.6 points per game last year with 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He reached double figures 10 times and had a career-high of 20 against Central Missouri. He led the team with 43 3-pointers and finished second shooting .426 from behind the arc. He finished the season strong, averaging 17.3 points per game in the final four games.
Ichabods looking for a solid starting five
Last year the Ichabods started 11 different players and used nine different starting lineups. Their best combination managed just three wins. Guard Andrew Meile started 24 of the 26 games, the most for any returner, and the team picked up nine of its 10 wins when he started. Washburn returns seven letterwinners, including four with a lot of starting experience. Forward Paul Byers returns after starting 19 games and going 8-11 when starting.
Bods and Ends
• The WU-FHSU series goes back to the 1918-19 season. Since joining the NCAA II in 1989-90, Washburn has played FHSU 17 times. Washburn has a 13-4 record since then. They played on a neutral court just once since then with the Ichabods winning 70-56 in 1989-90 on the way to the NAIA national tournament. FHSU’s win last year in Hays snapped a three-game winning streak for Washburn over the Tigers.
• Washburn’s win against Kansas Wesleyan snapped a five-game losing streak the Ichabods carried over from last year.
• Washburn moved to 70-30-1 all-time in season openers, 26-2 under Chipman and 22-1 in home openers at Lee Arena.
• The Ichabods improved to 28-22 in overtimes with the win over KWU, playing their second double-overtime game in two years. Washburn is now 6-6 all-time in 12 games that went into at least double-overtime.
• KWU is only the second NAIA school to take the Ichabods to overtime since joining NCAA II in 1989-90. Mid-America Nazarene defeated WU in overtime in 1994-95.
• In 17 seasons as an NCAA II school, the Ichabods have 10 NCAA tournament appearances and nine MIAA titles. Last year snapped a streak of three straight conference championships.
• The Ichabods suffered their first losing season since 1976-77 and first of head coach Bob Chipman’s career. They also failed to advance to the MIAA tournament for the first time since joining the league in 1989-90.
• The KU and KSU exhibition games aren’t the only DI opponents on Washburn’s schedule. The Ichabods will play a regular season game at Nevada-Las Vegas November 21. Last year the two schools met in an exhibition. Chipman and UNLV coach Lon Kruger are both K-State graduates with Chipman getting his degree in 1973 and Kruger getting his in 1975. |
