Ichabods set for another game with Cameron after overtime victory over Aggies last month
Washburn will look for its first pair of consecutive wins when it plays at Cameron Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup. The Ichabods (4-3) defeated CU 64-60 last month in overtime in Lee Arena. Since the season began with a win, WU has alternated wins and losses all year long.
The Ichabods won their MIAA opener Saturday at home against Missouri Western, 77-76 on a last-second jumper by senior guard Michael Williams. Cameron (6-2) has won two straight after a 79-77 victory over Midwestern State Saturday. Besides the loss against Washburn, the Aggies’ other loss came at Eastern New Mexico, a school the Ichabods defeated last month.
Following the game at CU, Washburn will play two games at the Lynn Holiday Classic. December 20 the Ichabods will play Lynn and on December 21 they will play Barry.

Williams hits last-second jumper for win in MIAA opener

Michael Williams hit a game-winning jumper with 1 second left to lead the Ichabods to a 77-76 win over Missouri Western State in both team’s MIAA opener at Lee Arena Saturday night. Frank Phifer and junior forward Brady Sisk each had double-doubles. Phifer led all scorers with a season-high 26 points and had 11 rebounds while Sisk had 12 points and led all players with 12 rebounds. Williams also reached double figures for Washburn with 12 points. MWSU’s senior guard J.R. Reed, who led the Griffons with 22 points, hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to put his team up 76-75. After a timeout Williams ran the ball up the court and hit a pull-up jumper just inside the free throw line to give the Ichabods a 1-0 start to the conference season. Phifer was held to just six points in the first half. In the second half he exploded for 20 points off 6-of-8 shooting and eight made free throws. He finished the night 7-of-10 from the field and 12-of-14 from the line. Down by two points with 34 seconds left, the Ichabods came out of their final timeout and Williams hit a 3-pointer to put WU up 74-73. Prior to making that basket, he was 0-for-5 from 3-point range in the game. After a missed shot from the Griffons and then a quick foul, WU’s junior guard Andrew Meile hit one of two free throws to put the Ichabods up by two. Reed followed with his three and then Williams came back with the basket at the end to give the ’Bods the win. Washburn shot 48 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 42 percent. The Griffons shot 53 percent. Washburn made up the difference by out-rebounding MWSU 37-27 and going 25-of-37 from the free throw line while the Griffons were 10-of-16. Junior guard Grant Hargett, making his first start of the year, led WU with four assists while Meile led with three steals.

Reid leads Aggies with 24 points in win over Midwestern State

LAWTON, Okla. - The Aggies defeated Midwestern State 79-77. Matthew Reid led Cameron with 24 points and four steals while Marlon Bernard led with 10 rebounds. Willie Tisdale Jr. had 19 points and Joseph Bolden had 16. The Aggies shot 41 percent while MSU shot 53 percent. Reid was 8-of-9 from the free throw line while CU shot 20-of-26 as a team from the line.

Ichabods get win over Aggies in third overtime of season
November 24, 2006
Washburn survived a second half surge from Cameron and held on for a 64-60 win over the Aggies in overtime. Michael Williams led WU with 14 points as the Ichabods improved to 3-2 going into their 10-day break. In the extra period Washburn led the whole way after Williams hit a 3-pointer 1:28 into the period. Washburn was fouled four times in the period and went 6-for-8 from the free throw line. The Aggies missed nine shots in the overtime while WU was 2-for-2. Both teams ended the game shooting 39 percent. Washburn made 14-of-16 free throws while Cameron was 6-of-15. Williams ended the game shooting 5-of-11 from the field with three 3-pointers. Along with him, Phifer, Brady Sisk and Paul Byers all reached double figures in scoring. Snyder led WU with nine rebounds and Phifer had a pair of blocks. Byers was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
About the Cameron Aggies
The Aggies are 6-2 this year after losses from Washburn and Eastern New Mexico. They are 4-0 at home. Leading the team in scoring this year is Matthew Reid with 18.0 points per game. Marlon Bernard is the leading rebounder with 5.9 a game. Joseph Bolden, who averages 16.9 points a game, led Cameron with 23 points in the WU-CU game earlier this year. As a team, CU is shooting 47 percent and averaging 76.1 points a game while allowing opponents 51 percent shooting and 74.5 points a game.
The Aggies were 12-15 last year and finished last in the Lone Star Conference North Division at 2-10. They were picked to finish last in the LSC North preseason poll this year.
CU coach Maurice Leitzke is in his first year as the head coach after spending two seasons as an Aggie assistant. He is a 1996 graduate of Evangel and played college ball at Valparasio from 1991-93, McHenry Community College during 1993-94 and then he finished his career at Southwest Baptist and Evangel, earning NAIA All-America honors in 1996. Prior to coaching at CU, he spent two years as an assistant at Southwest Baptist.
WU-CU series notes - Teams set to conclude home-and-away series
• Washburn leads the overall series 2-1 after a 64-60 win earlier this year at home in overtime.
• Washburn won the first meeting between the two, 74-63 on 12/15/01. The Aggies won last year, 66-64 in a neutral-site meeting at the Tarkanian Hoops Academy in Las Vegas, Nev.
• In the three games played between the two, Washburn is out-scoring CU 67.3 to 63.0.
• This will be Washburn’s first trip to Cameron.
• The two have never played in overtime.
Chipman second in the MIAA in wins as a league coach
Chipman’s win over Kansas Wesleyan gave him his 380th win, making him the second winningest coach while coaching in the MIAA. He now has 384. He entered the year tied with Boyd King, the coach at Truman from 1946-71 who compiled 379 wins while there. Tom Smith, the Missouri Western coach, has over 400 wins under his belt as an MIAA coach to lead all league coaches.
A winning history
• The Ichabods are 1,333-909 (.595 in 2,242 games) and are in their 103rd season of basketball.
• Starting their 23rd season in Lee Arena, the Ichabods are 306-49 (.862). The Ichabods are 3-0 this year at home and they finished the 2005-06 slate 7-6. The Ichabods are 120-18 in Lee Arena since the 1997-98 season.
• In 17 seasons as an NCAA II school, the Ichabods have 10 NCAA tournament appearances and nine MIAA titles. Last year snapped a streak of three straight conference championships.
• Washburn won the 1986-87 NAIA national championship with a 35-4 record under head coach Bob Chipman in his eighth year as coach.
• Washburn was fourth in the nation last year among NCAA II schools in attendance, averaging 2,750 fans a game. WU was the highest ranked MIAA team. As a conference, the MIAA had the second highest attendance with an average of 1,851 fans per game.
• The Ichabods suffered their first losing season last year since 1976-77 and first of head coach Bob Chipman’s career. They also failed to advance to the MIAA tournament for the first time since joining the league in 1989-90.

The Ichabods will play their final non-conference games of the year when they travel to the Lynn Holiday Classic. Washburn will play host Lynn December 20 at 6:30 p.m. Central time and then play Barry December 21 at 5 p.m. Central.
Washburn looking for second road win
The Ichabods are 1-2 on the road this year with the win coming at Eastern New Mexico. Last year’s lone road win came at Missouri Southern in a 60-56 win on 01/21/06. The Ichabods ended the year 1-8 in road contests last year.
Ichabods need offensive boost
Washburn was last in the MIAA averaging 68.1 points per game and a .401 field goal percentage coming into the week. The Ichabods’ 77 points scored in their last game tied a season-high.
Senior forward Frank Phifer, Washburn’s leading scorer, had a pair of 20-point games last week and moved from 12th in the MIAA last week in points per game all the way to fifth this week with a 17.6 average. He is seventh in free throw percentage at .796 and his 7.3 rebounds a game is seventh. He moved into the top-10 in field goal percentage this week coming in at 10th in the league with a .401 percentage.
Phifer gives Ichabods inside presence, leads team in scoring
Senior forward Frank Phifer leads the team and is fifth in the MIAA with 17.6 points a game and has reached double figures in all seven games. His last two games have been double-doubles and 20-point efforts. He had his first double-double at Washburn after scoring a team season-high 25 points at Central Oklahoma with 10 rebounds. He followed that with 26 points and 11 rebounds against Missouri Western for another double-double.
Phifer is shooting 52 percent from the field and is 80 percent from the free throw line, leading the ’Bods with 43 made free throws and 54 attempts. He also leads the team with 10 blocks and is second with 51 rebounds.
Phifer was 4th in the MIAA in blocked shots with 1.6 per game coming into the game. His free throw percentage was seventh best and he was also seventh in rebounding with 7.3 per game.
At UNLV he led the team with 12 points and six rebounds. He was named to the Eastern New Mexico all-tournament team after scoring 17 points in each game.
He had a double-double in an exhibition against Kansas with 22 points and 11 rebounds. In three games against DI schools this year he is averaging 14.0 points, counting the two exhibitions. With the 12 points against UNLV, Phifer now has 95 points in six games against DI schools, counting exhibitions. He played two exhibitions this year and three in 2004-05 while at Kentucky Wesleyan. He is averaging 15.8 points a game against DI competition.
Byers second on the team in scoring
Returning for his sophomore season is forward Paul Byers. He has double-digit efforts in four of seven games this year, already passing his total of two double-figure games from last year. He has 65 points (9.3/game), tied for third most on the team, off 43 percent shooting. He was 11-of-16 during two games in the ENMU Shootout for 31 points.
Byers has started all but one game this year. In his only game off the bench he scored 10 points and had six rebounds against Cameron.
Last year he played all 26 games with 19 starts and he led the Ichabods with 31 blocks, the seventh highest single-season total at WU and 14th highest career total.
Meile 5th in the MIAA in free throw percentage
Junior Andrew Meile comes back for his third year as the only returning starter at guard. He had his third double-figure game of the year with 15 points at Central Oklahoma. He exploded for 18 points against Fort Hays State off 6-of-11 shooting in the first game of the ENMU shootout. Against UNLV he was 4-of-6 for 10 points.
Meile made his first eight free throws of the year and is 18-of-22 (.818) from the line so far, fifth best in the conference. He leads the team with 13 steals and 1.9 steals per game.
Meile averaged 8.6 points per game last year with 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He reached double figures 10 times and had a career-high of 20 against Central Missouri. He led the team with 43 3-pointers and finished second shooting .426 from behind the arc. He finished the season strong, averaging 17.3 points per game in the final four games.
Williams giving WU senior leadership as starting guard
Senior Michael Williams has started all seven games as Washburn’s point guard. He is averaging 9.3 points a game and 2.0. He transferred to WU last year after playing a season at Northern Iowa.
Williams was the hero in Washburn’s win over Missouri Western. He hit a 3-pointer in the final minute to put WU up by a point. With just one second left he hit a pull-up jumper just inside the free throw line to give Washburn the win. Williams led Washburn with 14 points against Cameron and also threw in double digits with 16 in the season opener against Kansas Wesleyan.
The Ichabods are 3-0 when Williams scores 10 points or more.
Williams played in 19 games for UNI last year and scored 12 points with six rebounds and five assists. Prior to that, he played two years at Hutchinson Community College.
Sisk leading Ichabods off the bench
Junior forward Brady Sisk had his second career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds against Missouri Western. He leads the Washburn non-starters with 66 points off the bench. He is second on the team with 9.4 points a game, second with 25 field goals and third with 59 attempts. Sisk is averaging 19.7 minutes a game. He led the Ichabods in the season opener with 19 points and scored 10 against Cameron.
Sisk has reached double figures in scoring three times this year and the Ichabods are undefeated in those games.
Last year Sisk led the team with 14.4 points a game. He played in 23 of 26 games with 13 starts.
Snyder misses his first start with shoulder injury
Junior forward Kyle Snyder re-injured his shoulder at Central Oklahoma December 5 and then missed his first start of the year the next game against Missouri Western. Last year he played in six games before having surgery on the shoulder. He received a medical redshirt.
Snyder leads Washburn and is second in the MIAA with 8.8 rebounds a game. He had a double-double at Eastern New Mexico with a career-high 17 rebounds. He also had 12 points that game and a career-high four assists. Against both Cameron and Fort Hays State he pulled down nine rebounds.
Snyder is scoring 4.7 points a game and shooting 10-of-28 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line.
Ichabods looking for a solid starting five
Last year the Ichabods started 11 different players and used nine different starting lineups. Their best combination managed just three wins. Guard Andrew Meile started 24 of the 26 games, the most for any returner, and the team picked up nine of its 10 wins when he started. Washburn returns seven letterwinners, including four with a lot of starting experience. Forward Paul Byers returns after starting 19 games and going 8-11 when starting.
This year Washburn’s Michael Williams, Meile and Frank Phifer have started all seven games. Joining them has been Paul Byers and Kyle Snyder with six starts and Grant Hargett and Reed Hein with one start each.
Ichabods strong from the free throw line
The Ichabods were second in the MIAA with a .723 free throw percentage (115-of-159) coming into the week. They set team season-highs against Missouri Western with 25 made free throws and 37 attempts. They shot a season-high .875 against Cameron with a 14-for-16 effort and were .850 against Eastern New Mexico with a 17-for-20 mark.
They are shooting .754 (46-of-61) from the line in the final five minutes of the game and are .789 (15-for-19) in overtime periods (3 games, 4 periods).
Final notes on the Missouri Western game
• Washburn started junior guard Grant Hargett in place of injured junior forward Kyle Snyder. Hargett had four assists and a pair of rebounds.
• Washburn won its first game of the year when trailing at halftime.
• The Ichabods are now 3-0 at home with all three wins coming when trailing at the 5:00 mark.
• The Ichabods tied a season-high with 77 points and they set a season-high with 25 made free throws and 37 attempts.
• Junior forward Dylan Channel played in his first game of the year after starting the season with an injury. He had one rebound and one assist in eight minutes.
• Washburn started the MIAA season 1-0 for the first time since 2003-04. They beat MWSU that year in the conference opener.
• Phifer has reached double figures every game this year and he had his second double-double of the year. His 26 points is a team season-high. Sisk had his second double-double of his career.
• The game was the second earliest start to the MIAA season. The Ichabods played on 11/30/96 against Central Missouri to start MIAA play that year.
• Washburn moved back over .500 on the season and has alternated wins and losses all season long since opening with a win.
Bods and Ends
• Kyle Snyder’s 17 rebounds against ENMU was the most since Travis Robbins pulled in 17 on 11/30/04 against Mid-American Nazarene.
• Washburn’s 48 rebounds against ENMU was the most since 2004-05 for the Ichabods. They doubled up the Greyhounds 48-24 on rebounds and held a 17-1 advantage on offensive rebounds.
• With WU’s win over ENMU ending in regulation, the Ichabods avoided going into overtime for the third straight time, something WU has never done. The Ichabods opened the year with a pair of OTs, marking the sixth time they have played consecutive overtimes and first to start a season.
• UNLV was the first team to shoot 50 percent against WU this year and the first in the previous 15 games. Southwest Baptist was the last team to shoot at least 50 percent, hitting 52 percent of its shots on 01/14/06.
• The Ichabods are 29-23 all-time in overtimes with two wins and one loss this year. Washburn is 6-6 all-time in 12 games that went into at least double-overtime. |
