Ichabods fall at Cameron, split season series

LAWTON, Okla. - Senior forward Frank Phifer had his third straight double-double and 20-point game but it wasn't enough as the Ichabods fell 73-65 at Cameron Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods out-scored the Aggies 39-35 in the second half but couldn't overcome a late first-half surge by CU as the Aggies evened the two-game season series at 1-1. Washburn (4-4) will play at the Lynn tournament next week with a game against Lynn Wednesday and then another against Barry Thursday.

Phifer scored 20 points off 9-of-16 shooting and had a team season-high 18 rebounds. Sophomore forward Paul Byers had 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds for his first double double of the season and junior guard Andrew Meile scored 11 off three 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.

The Ichabods shot 31 percent in the first half. They opened up on a 7-0 run but then cooled as the Aggies came back and led 10-9 at 14:08. They built the lead to eight before Washburn cut it to two, 24-22 at 6:39. The Aggies ended the half on a 14-4 run to take a 38-26 lead into the locker room.

In the second half the Ichabods out-shot CU 43 percent to 42 percent but couldn't overcome the deficit. Cameron was up by as much as 21 in the second half and the Ichabods came as close as four at 65-61 with 1:39 remaining.

For the game the 'Bods shot 37 percent while CU shot 46 percent. Washburn out-rebouned CU 45-35 but committed 19 turnovers to the Aggies' 13. Junior guard Grant Hargett led WU with four assists while Phifer led WU with three blocks.
