Ichabods win first MIAA Championship

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Washburn Ichabods won their first MIAA tennis championship after topping Northwest Missouri State 5-1 in the finals of the conference tennis tournament. The Ichabods topped the Bearcats 5-1 to improve to 16-5 on the season. The Ichabods will now wait until Tuesday to find out their regional assignments.
The Ichabods opened the match by winning two of the three doubles with Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plum topping Pablo Acebedo 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Brad Johnston and Nathan Martin turning back Daniel Isieto and Jake Saulsbury 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Vliegenberg, Martin and Drew Hanson all won their singles matches to push the Ichabods to the 5-1 win. The Bearcats topped the Ichabods 6-3 earlier this season on April 12 in Topeka. The Ichabods went into the MIAA Tournament as the No. 3 team in the region and the Bearcats were the No. 1 ranked team.

face Northwest Missouri in the MIAA Tennis Championships on Sunday at 9
a.m. The Ichabods advanced to the championship match by sliding past
Southwest Baptist 5-4. Washburn’s No. 1 singles player, sophomore Rutger
Vliegenberg, topped Daniel Prerad in three sets winning 7-2 in the tie
breaker to clinch the match. The No. 1 seeded Northwest Missouri
Bearcats topped the fourth seed, Truman, 5-0 to advance to the finals.
Northwest topped the Ichabods 6-3 in Topeka on April 12.
