Ichabods defend MIAA Championship

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The No. 22 Washburn Ichabods successfully defended their MIAA Tournament Championship from last season winning their second overall MIAA title with a 5-2 win over the No. 36 ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats.
The Ichabods started out the match taking two of the three doubles. Washburn’s Brad Johnston and Nathan Martin, the No. 6 ranked team in the region, topped the No. 7 ranked squad of Daniel Usieto and Pablo Acebedo 8-5. The other doubles win for the Ichabods was picked up at the three slot with Ryan Ward and Drew Hanson handing Lucas Ariboni and Felipe Gennari an 8-4 setback. The Ichabods lost at No. 1 doubles as Chris Smith and Jake Salsbury, the No. 5 ranked team in the region pulled the upset topping the No. 4 duo of Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plum 8-3.
In doubles action, Vliegenberg topped Usieto 6-2, 6-2 to put the Ichabods up 3-1 in the match. Ward took care of Gennari 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles pushing the lead to 4-1 in the match. The Bearcats’ Saulsbury kept them in the match after defeating Plum 6-4, 7-5. Washburn’s Martin wrapped up the match and the championship for the Ichabods with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win for the Ichabods.
Washburn’s record improved to 16-2 on the season while the Bearcats fell to 13-6. The Ichabods will be off from competition until the NCAA North Central Regional with sites and times to be announced at a later date.
