Lady Blues open 2004 with 4-2 win over Southwest Minnesota State

TOPEKA - The Washburn Lady Blues opened their 2004 season with a 4-2 win over regional foe Southwest Minnesota State at the Washburn Soccer Complex. The Lady Blues will take on Benedictine on Sept. 8 in Atchison before returning home on Fri., Sept. 10 when they open their MIAA schedule against Missouri Southern. The Lady Blues will also be attempting to break the NCAA Division II attendance record of 1,820 that MIAA foe Emporia State currently owns.

The Lady Blues' sophomore forward Jenna Lawless scored 14 minutes into the match on an assist from sophomore midfielder Anna Fahey. It did not take long for the Lady Blues to score again as Lawless connected again on an assist from Jamie Francis at the 15:22 mark. The 36 seconds between goals was the fastest back-to-back goal in school history topping the previous mark of 1:23 set last season.

Sophomore forward Jolene Silovsky scored her first goal in a Lady Blues uniform at the 29:21 mark on an assist from Lawless.

The Mustangs would cut the lead to 3-2. The final score of the game was on Silovsky's second goal of the afternoon as she scored right before the final horn unassisted.

Lawless tied a school record with her five individual points.
