Lady Blues announce 2006 recruiting class

TOPEKA - Head soccer coach Tim Collins added six student-athletes from Kansas to his roster for the 2006 season as he announced the fourth recruiting class in the short history of Washburn soccer. Collins, who started to program in 2003, added two players from the Topeka, three from the Kansas City area and one from Wichita.

“I’m extremely happy with this group and I think it will enhance the soccer program,” said Collins. “They are all terrific human beings who will not only perform well on the field, but in the classroom also.”

The Lady Blues had their best season last year with an 11-5-4 record and a second-place finish in the MIAA with a 7-3-4 mark. Collins will have his first group of four-year seniors on the field this year with six players returning who have been at Washburn since its inaguaral soccer season in 2003. Overall, there will be nine seniors on the team next year.

Lettered in soccer under coach Nathan Wilke with the Maize Eagles...helped her team to a third-place 6A finish in state her senior year...was named team MVP her senior season...also played volleyball and basketball...parents are Julie and Larry Breitenstein...undecided on college major.

A three-year starter and captain for the Olathe Northwest Ravens under coach Lewis Theobald...earned all-state honorable mention...named to the all-city and all-Sunflower League second teams as a midfielder...holds school record for most points in a season and career...also played volleyball, earning all-Sunflower League defensive specialist first team honors...named to the honor roll for three years and was on the student council twice...daughter of Linda and Timothy Lambeth...will major in forenscic science.

Lauren Lawless • 5-5 • F • Topeka, Kan. • Washburn Rural HS

Lettered in soccer all four years for the Washburn Rural Jr. Blues under head coaches Brian Hensyel and Kevin Bordewick...was a two-year letterwinner at libero as she helped the volleyball team to a third-place state finish her senior year...parents are Eileen and Patrick Lawless...will major in elementary education...sister Jenna Lawless will be a senior on the team and is the all-time leading scorer at WU with 38 points.

Courtney Russell • 5-4 • F/MF • Olathe, Kan. • Olathe South HS

Played midfield and forward for head coach Will Stoskopf for the Olathe South Falcons...a member of the 2006 class 6A champions ... also was a defensive specialist on the volleyball team...named to the honor roll and a member of the student council general assembly...parents are Loretta and Greg Russell...plans to major in business.

A four-year letterwinner for coach Terry Hair for the Olathe East Hawks...a member of the 2004 6A state champions...also lettered in cross country for two years...a National Honors Society member and was named to the honor roll three times...parents are Susan and Dave Taylor...will major in business.

Angela Wiseman • 5-6 • MF • Topeka, Kan. • Shawnee Heights HS
A four-year letterwinner for the Shawnee Heights Thunderbirds under coach Marc Serrano...helped her team to a state title her sophomore year and a second-place finish her junior year...won regional championships her first three years...earned second-team all-state honors...was named to the all-region, all-city and all-league teams in her career...also was a guard on the basketball team...plans to major in business...parents are Jeannie Wiseman and Dennis Wiseman.
