Lady Blues topple Emporia State for third straight time winning MIAA opener

TOPEKA - The Washburn Lady Blues opened the 2006 MIAA slate with a 2-1 win over arch-rival Emporia State. It was the third straight win over the Hornets and their 10th unbeaten match in a row dating back to last season. Washburn will not play another match until they continue their six-match homestand with a big weekend starting Saturday, Sept. 16 at noon when they battle Central Missouri and then the following day take on Truman at 1 p.m.

The teams played a scoreless first 40 minutes, but Washburn's Courtney Russell tipped a pass to Keeley Lambeth, who passed it to Ashley Taylor for the matches first goal. It was Taylor's second goal of the season as Washburn took a 1-0 lead into the break.

ESU's Raquel White scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Sarah Tetuan in the 57th minute to knot the score at 1.

Washburn's Jessica Mainz scored the winner in the 69th minute from 15-yards out on an assist from Lauren Schwindt to put the Lady Blues up 2-1.

Jenna Hatlestad picked up the win for the Lady Blues in goal allowing the lone second half goal with two saves.

With the win, Washburn improves to 6-0-1 and 1-0-0 in the MIAA, while Emporia State drops to 1-4-0 and 0-1-1 in conference play.

The match a physical one with 31 combined fouls between the two teams. Washburn out shot the Hornets 16 to 6 and attempted 11 corner kicks compared to two for ESU.
