Lady Blues win MIAA Championship with 2-1 win over Missouri Southern

TOPEKA - The No. 14 Washburn Lady Blues wrapped up the regular season as the MIAA Champions as they topped No. 21 Missouri Southern 2-1 on Senior Day at Yager Stadium. The Lady Blues will now wait until Monday at 4 p.m. CST to find out who their opponent will be when the NCAA National Tournament begins with the NCAA Central Regional on Friday at a to be determined site. It will be the first NCAA postseason appearance in the program's four-year history. With the win, Washburn snapped Truman's seven-year streak of MIAA championships.
Senior Jenna Lawless, one of 10 seniors to be honored before the match started, gave the Lady Blues the match-winning goal in the 64th minute on an assist from sophomore Jessica Mainz snapping a 1-1 tie.
The Lady Blues scored first in the match in the 39th minute when Mainz scored her league-leading 12th goal of the season putting Washburn up 1-0.
In the 57th minute, Missouri Southern's Jessica Buhman scored her second goal of the season on a free kick 30-yards out into the back left corner of the goal.
Senior Jenna Hatlestad picked up her 31st career win in goal for the Lady Blues. She had the one goal against.
Washburn out shot the Lions 14 to 5, including a 6 to 1 advantage in the first half. The Lady Blues also had a 6 to 1 lead in corner kicks as well.
