KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – No. 15 Washburn and host Truman each scored second half goals as the two played to a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon in MIAA action. The Lady Blues (14-1-3, 9-1-2) hold a five-point lead in the conference standings after second-place Missouri Southern defeated Missouri Western. MSSU has three games left while Washburn has two. The Lady Blues next match will be Friday against Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m.
WU had an 8-3 advantage on shots in the first period but failed to score. Seven minutes into the second period Jessica Mainz scored her team-leading 11th goal when she kicked in the ball on a scrum in front of the net. The unassisted goal at 52:07 moved her two goals away from tying her own single-season record of 13, set last year.
With six minutes left in regulation Truman’s Jessica Wiegert scored on an assist from Emily Newsham to tie the score.
The two teams went without a shot the final minutes of regulation and then in the first overtime WU got off the only shot during the 10-minute period. The final OT saw each team take two shots with WU’s Kaydi Hooker putting one on net 106:34. That would be the final shot of the game as the two left the wet and sloppy field tied at 1-1.
Along with the score, most of the rest of the game was played evenly. WU led in shots 14-13 and fouls 25-23 while each teams took five corner kicks. Lady Blue goalkeeper Jenna Hatlestad and her TSU counterpart each had five saves in the 110 minutes.
