Lady Blues knock off South Dakota to win 3rd straight match to open season

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Washburn Lady Blues improved to 3-0-0, setting their record for the most consecutive wins to open the season with a 3-1 win over South Dakota, who appeared in the NCAA Division II Tournament last season and topped the Lady Blues 4-1 last season.
Washburn scored all three of their goals in the first half with Jessica Mainz scoring the first of her two goals. She scored the opening goal for the Lady Blues at 11:16 mark of the first half on a penalty kick. At the 13:38 mark, two minutes and 32 seconds later, she added another goal on an assist from Jolene Silovsky. It was her fourth of the season, to push the Washburn lead to 2-0. Washburn closed out the scoring in the first half as Lauren Schwindt scored her second goal of the season putting the Lady Blues up 3-0.
The Coyotes (1-1-1) scored their lone goal with just over 25 minutes to play on a penalty kick by Taryn Ketter.
Washburn goalkeeper Jenna Hatlestad picked up the win collecting nine saves in goal allowing the one penalty kick goal.
Washburn out shot the Coyotes 18-16, including a 11-5 advantage in the first half.
The Lady Blues will look to win their fourth straight game, which would set a school record for consecutive wins, on Sunday as they will take on Wayne State (Neb.) at 1:30 p.m. in their second game of the CMSU/Holiday Inn Classic in Warrensburg, Mo.
